The Tabriz carpet weavers wove extremely beautiful carpets of wool or silk. One of their skills was that they were able to
create very beautiful and finely designed carpets from a mix of wool and silk yarn. Professional yarn dyers were able to dye
silk yarn in very calm tones. Carpets with mixed wool and silk were distinguished by their nobility, finesse, and eye pleas-
ing color design.
The artistic structure of this carpet woven based on a “Lechek-turunj” composition consists of a middle field and border.
The “Lechek-turunj” composition was not employed only in Tabriz, but was widely used in the decorative applied arts in
the Near East and Central Asia as well.
This composition consists of two large main elements: a “turunj” (medallion) and four petals. The turunj is placed in the
center of the middle field and the petals are depicted symmetrically in the four corners. The area between the turunj and the
petals on carpets with simple structures do not have patterns and have only one color. However, on carpets with complex
compositions, this area is decorated with spiral-like branches that have stylized flowers and leaves.
The forms of the turunj and petals depend on the size of the carpet. If the length of the carpet is longer than its width, the
turunj placed in the center of the middle field takes on an oblong shape. If the area surrounding the turunj is stretched hori-
zontally, then the turunj itself is in an oval shape. The round medallions are eight-, twelve-, or in rare cases, sixteen-angular.
Petals come in different shapes as well. They are placed in the corners of the middle field in the form of triangles. Symmet-
rical petals are in the form of right-angled triangles most often, but the asymmetrical petals are in the form of acute-angled
triangles. National artists call asymmetric petals “etekli lechek.”
A middle-sized pink medallion and a turunj are placed on the black setting of the middle field. There is a smaller light
brown medallion in the center of the pink medallion. A twelve-petal “anagul” element designed in cream, gray, pink, lilac,
and orange is represented in the middle of the small medallion. Six small four-petal flowers designed in cream and orange
colors; lilac-colored six-, seven-, and eight-petal flowers with white stems and light blue and cornelian leaves; and orange
