The Ganja carpet was woven in the village of Topalhasanli in the Goygol district and its size is reminiscent of Karabakh
carpets. The carpets with this pattern were also woven in the villages of the Shamkir region. The elements on the central
field can also be found in Shirvan carpets.
The carpet consists of a central field and four border stripes. The main border decorated with octagonal stars embellishes
the two minor areas decorated with stylized patterns formed of two sides of “islimi” (arabesque) elements and a small
stripe decorated with patterns consisting of one triangular element. The central field consists of fourteen adjoining lakes.
The artistic structure of the carpet is a production of the weaver’s individual creation. This composition is called “tek gy-
ollu” (one lake). The filler elements on the carpet include s-shaped elements, hooks, cross-like elements, x-shaped elements,
rhombs, animals, apples, and flower decorations.
The composition can be appreciated as a completely endlessness symbol. In this case the number of “gyol” increases
while the composition remains unchanged. The separate elements are carriers of the different ages and different artistic
