decree of Shah Abbas the First (1607). The inscription of
the decree still survives.
The prolonged Safavid-Ottoman wars ended in 1639.
Nakhchivan remained a part of the Safavid state until the
beginning of the eighteenth century.
At the beginning of the eighteenth century, several parts
of Azerbaijan, including Nakhchivan, fell under the domin-
ion of the Ottoman Empire. As part of the Ottoman Empire,
in 1727, a census document entitled “The detailed notebook
of the Nakhchivan Sanjag” was compiled. “The detailed
notebook of the Nakhchivan Sanjag” is a very valuable
historical document.
“The detailed notebook” is also a very important source
for studying the history of Nakhchivan. It provides reliable
information about the administrative-territorial divisions
of Nakhchivan, the amount of taxes paid, and the num-
ber of people, for example. According to this data, there
were fourteen districts in the Nakhchivan Sanjag (Nakh-
chivan, Alinja, Sair Mavazi, Darashahbuz, Mulki-Arslan,
Mavaziyi-Khatun, and others). There were 9,788 taxpay-
ers in Nakhchivan paying a total of 2,629,059 akhcha to
the treasury

(1736 – 1747), the Azerbaijani lands under Ottoman domi-
nation were returned and added to the Afsharid Empire.
Trying to strengthen his power in Nakhchivan, which was
of vital strategic importance, Nadir Shah Afsharid exiled
