The “Sirt-Chichi” carpet of Guba is well known all over the world. It was woven
from wool, it has manuscript elements, and its weaving technique is “turkbaf.” This
carpet was woven in Amsar village, a well-known weaving area of Guba. “Alchagul
Chichi,” “Khirdagul Chichi,” “Gollu Chichi,” and “Sirt Chichi” carpets were woven
in Amsar village.
Very fine patterns have been depicted on this carpet. The carpet’s knot density is
high, allowing all the patterns woven on this carpet to be described in detail.
The carpet consists of a border strip and central field. Of the five strips in the bor-
der, two madakhil are symmetric and have been trimmed with the same patterns.
The first and last border strip begins and ends with “mollabashi,” the major border
contains transverse, crossed geometric patterns and flower descriptions. The next
border strip contains eight-point stars. The border strips are separated from each
other by white “su” and fine “alamunjug” elements.
The carpet has a complex artistic structure. The perfect central field is woven in
a dark color that allows all the small details to be seen clearly. The central field
contains gols with hooked and stepped edges in one line, geometrical elements cal-
led “takar” (wheel) in the second line, and repetition of motifs. Small motifs such
as “bashmag,” “nazarlik,” “rhomb,” and s-shaped elements are woven among the
many elements of the carpet.
This carpet is considered a classic sample of the “Sirt Chichi” tradition. The small
gol with hooked and stepped edges have their own meanings. This pattern is called
as “pillakan” (stairs). This conventional name assumes philosophical meaning, re-
lated to the different layers of the world. All layers of the world are frequently used
artistic subjects. It is the result of the humanistic philosophical outlook of weavers.
Therefore, the carpet was considered sacred and it is used for fortune telling, pra-
ying, and namaz. The carpets always carried energy. From this point of view, “Sirt
Chichi” may be considered a sample of all humanistic values.
Some repair and restoration work has been conducted on the fringe of the carpet.
The carpet is in excellent condition. The carpet is of artistic, historic, and scientific
importance.
