Guba Group of Azerbaijani carpets: gen-
eral review.
There are three great carpet-
weaving centers or groups in the historical
geographical territory of Shirvan: Shir-
van (Shamakhi), Baku, and Guba. Each of
these groups has general roots and char-
acteristic features and “indeed the history
of Shirvan makes this issue clear. Shirvan
passed through historical paths of devel-
opment until the khanate period. The his-
torical situation during the creation of the
khanates led to the separation of the Guba
and Baku khanates from Shamakhi. Due
to this situation, specific features created
in the economic life of independent po-
litical bodies developed new conditions
and general historical traditions of Shir-
van.”

The formation of the Guba carpet
weaving school arose as a logical result of
the historical development in the same re-
gion. The historical territory of Guba cov-
ers a wide geographical area in close rela-
tion with Darband and its surroundings
during the Shirvanshah period, as well as
during the development of the khanates.
