The “Khan” carpet is one of the most exceptional and fine weaving samples of
Guba. Its material is wool, it has manuscript elements, and is pile weave. Such car-
pets were produced in the Jimi, Gonagkand, and Budug villages of Guba. Someti-
mes this type of carpet was called “Khan-Gonagkand.” At exhibitions organized in
the nineteenth century, the “Khan” carpet was presented under the name “Guba.”
It has a very fine composition. The background of this carpet is usually dark blue.
As a rule, its patterns are ivory. This color harmony has already been changed from
classic tradition.
Stylized geometrical patterns have been placed in the structure of the “bandi-ru-
mu” on an empty space. The patterns in the central field of “Khan” carpets are li-
kened to prayers written in Arabic calligraphy. There are ornaments reminiscent of
human heads on this carpet. The depictions of trees, branches, eight-pointed stars,
rhombs, and animals have all been depicted on the carpet in abstract form.
If there is only one fruit on the tree, pomegranate-like fruits are woven in pairs on
both sides. Lines are used more in this abstract composition. They carry complex
and esoteric meanings and content related to sacred views. In addition to Islamic
elements, attributes relating to fire-worship are also seen on this carpet. For examp-
le, the pomegranate is considered a sacred fruit in both beliefs (fire-worship and
Islam). There are many conventionalities on this carpet. The history of creating this
carpet reaches back to the deep layers of the history of “kufi” border strips.
The border strip of the “Khan” carpet consists of three parts: a central border and
two madakhil strips. Each strip has free elements. They all consist of plant patterns.
Due to the white color and the ivory patterns woven in the central field, a coordina-
tion and harmony has been created.
No repair or restoration work has been conducted on the carpet. The carpet is in
excellent condition. The carpet is of artistic, historic, and scientific importance.
