The “Gollu Chichi” is one of the most popular carpets of the Guba group. It has
been woven in Chichi village, situated at the highest point of Guba. Its material is
wool and it has manuscript elements. Its weaving technique is “turkbaf.” The carpet
is in its original condition.
There are many ideas about the compositional structure of this carpet. Some be-
lieve that cheshni were taken from fabric samples brought to Azerbaijan from for-
eign countries, but some believe it is related to the diagonal strips on the front side
of the Qizilbash’s turbans. The carpet consists of a central field and border strip.
The border strip consists of three parts. The first border strip consists completely
of depictions of the “qarmaq” element. This pattern gives the carpet animation and
the illusion of action. The second strip has a yellow background and its surface has
been trimmed with red flowers. At last, in the third border strip, a “zigzag” pattern
has been woven in blue and yellow. Each of the three border strips was woven pur-
posefully. They are related to beliefs, faith, and the mystical outlook of the weaver’s
genetic memory.
The color of the central field of the carpet is very successful. There is a connection
between the ivory central field and the background of the border strip. The central
field contains two uneven and diagonal arm-like gol elements. They are attractive
due to their red, brown, dark blue, and green tones. The flowers, branches, trees, s-
shapes, squares, rhombs, and other abstract patterns have been depicted throughout
the surface of the central field. The history of most of these elements reaches back to
the pre-Christian era. The tree is a sign of eternal life, flowers are symbols of para-
dise, and a square is a sign of four cardinal poles or the four elements of fire, earth,
water and air.
The carpet exhibits a very successful color arrangement; it has a high density. It is
an unmatched sample from an artistic and technical point of view.
No repair or restoration work has been conducted on the carpet. The carpet is in
excellent condition. The carpet is of artistic, historic, and scientific importance.
