The “Jimi” carpet is one of the most lovable samples of the Guba group. It is re-
miniscent of the carpet composition “Garagashli” in some details. The warp, weft,
and pile of the carpet are wool. Its weaving style is “turkbaf.” This carpet contains a
“kenare” (yolluk) feature. Experts believe that the “Jimi” carpet is the central field of
a rug set. The carpet was woven in Jimi village, Guba region.
The carpet is in its original condition. Its pattern has been woven exactly with a
high density. The border strip of the carpet consists of three parts. In the two exter-
nal borders, madakhil have been trimmed with the same patterns. Though these
patterns are small in size, they have been woven in fine form on the dark blue back-
ground with yellow and red wool in the form of a clove. The major border has been
decorated with diagonal elements woven in the style of a “tirma” shawl pattern.
Each of these patterns woven densely and tenderly creates the impression of a clear
lining. There is “abrash” in the border strip of one section of the carpet. This wool
“abrash” remained in the lower area of the skein and shows a pale dye color. After
some time, the carpet is trimmed and washed and the pale field changes its tone
slightly.
The central field of the carpet is dark blue. In the center, geometrical rhomb ele-
ments with hooked edges have been woven. Grape leaves, eight-pointed stars, and
“sajayag” elements have been woven harmonically. Sometimes, the “sajayag” ele-
ment is interpreted as a form of the “islimi” pattern. Among weavers, the “sajayag”
is considered a symbol of fire or flame in the form of a bird image woven harmoni-
cally and with great pleasure.
All patterns woven on “Jimi” carpets have their own artistic forms and deep me-
anings.
Each blue, red, yellow, and ivory color makes the carpet more attractive in its
warmth.
No repair or restoration work has been conducted on the carpet. The carpet is in
excellent condition. The carpet is of artistic, historic, and scientific importance.
