Azerbaijani carpets / TABRIZ GROUP
The carpet has a rich pattern arrangement. In the red background middle field there is a large rhomboidal medallion with
an ivory background. Inside the medallion, there is another small blue medallion and it also has another eight-petal light
brown medallion inside. The other areas are filled with various tiny elements.
In the lower and upper parts of the medallion, there are two ivory “qubba” (dome). This element, used as a combining
element in carpets belonging to Azerbaijan’s Tabriz and other groups, is distinguished here by its small size. In the lower
and upper parts where the “qubba” join the medallion, there are small eight-petal flowers in white and blue. Inside the
“qubba” there are red, white, and blue eight-petal flowers encircled by ivory and on the tip there are seven flowers. The
outside of the medallion is decorated with ivory, light brown, light green, and dark blue grapes and grapevines joining to
one another in a chain.
The gaps in the middle field and the four sides are decorated with branches adorned with ivory, blue, and brown flowers
and leaves.
The border ornament of this carpet differs from other carpets. Instead of madakhils in traditional shapes, an oval wreath-
like flowers and leaves in ivory, light brown, light green, and dark blue colors surround the middle field. In the flowers’
place, there are four large and four small bunches of flowers. The part replacing the main border has a dark blue back-
ground. On the ivory background, there are ten small medallions with blue background and ten with white background
and an ivory-red bunch of flowers. The blue medallion is adorned with red, light violet, and dark blue flowers and leaves,
and white medallions with red, ivory, and dark blue roses.
Flowers branch out of the blue medallions toward the edges of the carpet.
On the corner of the carpet there are small, dark blue medallions encircled by yellow branches. The border encircling the
main border is completed with yellow branches instead of “su” (water).
The dominant colors on the carpet are ivory, red, and dark blue. The other colors are used relatively less. Colors are com-
plexly distributed and the color richness increases the quality of the carpet.
The energy of the background color, which plays a key role, is soothed by the colors of the main elements.
In this carpet with rich vegetal patterns, the color arrangement was patterned with great professionalism and a color pal-
ette pleasing to all.
The carpet has an artistic, historic, and scientific importance. It is in excellent condition. Its pile is woolen and its wrap and
weft are made of cotton.
