Azerbaijani carpets / TABRIZ GROUP
The artistic composition of the carpet consists of a middle area and a border.
In the center of the dark blue background middle field there is a medallion with petals. Inside the medallion there is a
small, pink, four-petal medallion with scalloped edges. In the medallion there are depictions of flower and leaf motifs in
ivory, dark red, dark blue, light green, and dark brown. The flower and leaf motifs branching out of the medallion towards
the gaps were designed with a high professionalism. The petals around the medallion are surrounded with violet “su”
(water).
On the upper and bottom of the middle field there are half-medallions with light brown background. When these half-
medallions are joined, they appear complete. The edges of the medallions are surrounded with ivory leaf motifs. On the
leaves there are blue and violet flowers. Near the medallions on the corners of the carpet there are trees with flowery
branches spreading towards the gaps of the upper section. There are flower motifs inside the brown medallion as well. The
carpet’s main dark blue background border is decorated with flowers trimmed in ivory-brown and violet-red. The leaves
on the branches are light green and their surroundings are decorated with ivory “su.” The main border is encircled with
a light brown minor border filled with dark red and blue flowers and ivory leaves on both sides. The edges of the minor
border are encircled with madakhils filled with red-ivory and green-ivory cogged motifs. The edges of the madakhils are
completed with black, ivory, and red “su.” The regular coordination of the dark and light colors creates a color palette that
is universally appealing. The flower and leaf motifs in light and lively colors seem very contradictory on the dark blue
background. The vegetal elements typical for Tabriz carpets are also applied. The weaver enriched the color arrangement
by changing the colors of every other “su” completing the edges of roses, flowers, leaves and tree branches and achieved a
spectacular color arrangement
The carpet has an artistic, historic, and scientific importance. The pile of the carpet is woolen and its wrap and weft are
made of cotton. It is in excellent condition.
