Azerbaijani carpets / TABRIZ GROUP
The artistic composition of the carpet consists of a middle
field and border.
The main decoration of the carpet is a cypress tree on the left
corner of the middle field, a wolf next to the tree, a flower-
ing tree on the right of the wolf, a river near the tree, and two
fish swimming in the river. On the river’s bank there is a bird
catching fish and a willow tree with birds on its branches.
In the center of the middle field on the left, two male and
female gazelles are standing and on the right of the female ga-
zelle, there is a tree with flowering branches. On the right of
the carpet’s center a lion is depicted.
In the upper section, there are images of a pair of trees on a
hill.
The birds warbling on the branches draw attention.
Under the tree on the left, there are figures of gazelles follow-
ing one another. On the ivory background of the carpet, there
are deer, gazelles, tigers, lions, wolves, warbling nightingales,
and parrots. The cypress trees depicted repeatedly on the gaps
of the border make the composition richer. The main border is
surrounded from both sides with blue and green minor bor-
ders.
The minor borders are decorated with the elements called
“almagulu” (apple blossom).
The main border is surrounded by a dark blue lace, deco-
rated with dark blue-red, dark blue, and white flowers and
small triangles. The lace is completed with red and white “su”
(water).
The minor borders are encircled with madakhils decorated
with wave-like lines. The gaps of the wavy lines are filled with
small leaves.
Trees, plants, and animals found in Tabriz and its neighbor-
ing regions are depicted on the carpet. The bottom of the car-
pet resembles alpine meadows and its upper part has an exte-
rior scene. It shows the changing seasons reflected in the carpet.
More than ten color shades were used on the carpet, including red, dark blue, green, blue, sky-blue, brown, pink, white,
ivory, yellow, and others. The colors are distributed in a complex form and the richness of colors increased the artistic
quality of the carpet. On the predominantly ivory background, other dark colors are distinguished with substantial expres-
siveness. The colors typical for Tabriz are used here with a high professionalism and the traditional color arrangement and
balance are fulfilled.
Here, the fulfillment of the traditional color arrangement principles shows the free choice of colors, which is one of the
special characteristics of Tabriz carpets.
The carpet has an artistic, historic, and scientific importance. It is in excellent condition. Its pile is woolen and its wrap and
weft are made of silk.
