jan’s fight for independence further. The Shamakhi region played a large historical role in the creation of the independent
Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (Map 3). In July of 1918, the Caucasus Army of Islam entered Shamakhi. The Democratic
Republic Government was founded here. The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic collapsed with the invasion in April 1920
and the creation of Soviet government in Azerbaijan.
Soviet period. As of late April in 1920, Soviet government organs began operating in Shamakhi region. The Shamakhi
region had a specific place among the fifteen regions of Azerbaijan. As a result of the administrative-territorial division
implemented at the end of 1929, eight regions (with the exclusion of NakhchivanAutonomous Soviet Socialist Republic and
Mountainous Karabakh Autonomous Region) were established and one of them was Shirvan. As part of the foundation of
regions in 1930, the main territory of the Shamakhi region Shamakhi district was established.
The Shamakhi district preserved the best traditions of historical Shirvan to modern time and developed further in the
independent Republic of Azerbaijan.
