pect, both the general historical roots of all the
three groups as well as the grounds for their se-
paration into independent schools should be elu-
cidated. The history of Shirvan partially explains
this issue. The relatively limited development of
Shirvan prior to the period of the khanates led
to very separate advances in each of the khana-
tes within Shirvan, including Guba, Baku, and
Shamakhi. In this way, a unique agricultural and
economic life was formed by independent politi-
cal entities, developing new historical conditions
and traditions in Shirvan. Despite this situation,
the preservation of the general name of Shirvan in
introducing the carpet weaving groups of Baku
and Guba is controversial. To solve this problem,
first the history of Shirvan prior to the establish-
ment of the khanates is examined. In addition,
the Shirvan carpet-weaving group is referred to
as Shirvan (Shamakhi). Finally, the general roots
of the carpet-weaving groups formed in histori-
cal Shirvan are defined.
