Azerbaijani carpets / TABRIZ GROUP
The artistic composition of the carpet with a rich pattern design consists of a middle area and a border.
On the red background middle field there is an ivory medallion with an altar-shaped upper and lower section. Inside the
medallion there is another quadrangular medallion. In the lower and upper sections of the medallion, there is an element
with a pentagonal projection known as “qubba” (dome). In the center of this red background medallion, there is an ivory
medallion. Inside of the medallion there are depictions of flowers and leaves. The flowers are red, accented with ivory,
pink, yellow, and orange or blue, accented with turquoise, green, yellow, and brown. The edges of the ivory medallion are
completed with pink, green, and black steps. The gaps inside the quadrangle medallion are decorated with rhomboidal
“buta,” four-, five-, and eight-petal flowers, and leafy branches. The upper and lower parts of the quadrangle medallion
are encircled with wavy lines on the outside and straight lines with the same colors on the left and right. On the inside,
it is encircled with dark red madakhils with hooked projections. In the ivory background medallion, there are motifs of
four-, five-, and eight-petal flowers with dark blue, dark and light brown, dark red, yellow, light red, pink, blue, and black
leaves, “buta,” arrows, “gaychi baliq,” and rhomboidal elements. The edges of the medallion are surrounded with black
“su” on the inside and with dark red and ivory hooks from the outside. The edges of the hooked elements are completed
with black “su.” There are madakhils with a dark blue background and small zigzag elements surrounding the medallion
on the outside from the left and right. On the madakhils surrounding the upper and lower parts of the medallion, there are
tiny “dord unsur” (four elements) motifs.
The motifs on the madakhils above the medallion are blue and yellow and the ones below on the right and left are dark
blue and yellow. The color of the motifs on the corners and on the background is the same as the background of the quad-
rangle medallion and motifs. The main dark blue background border is decorated with elements called “chaynik nishan.”
These elements are also known as stylized “bagha” (tortoise). The gaps of the main border are filled with vegetal and
“buta” elements. The main borders are surrounded with ivory minor borders decorated with flowers and chain branches.
The flowers on the branches are designed in brown, green, dark blue, dark red, and pink and the branches are brown. The
edges of the minor borders are completed with red “su.” The dark blue madakhils on the edges and outside the middle
field complete the general composition. The dominant colors of the carpet are ivory, red, and dark blue. The other colors
are used relatively less. The distribution of colors increases the carpet’s artistic quality. The energy of the background plays
a key role in soothing the colors of the main elements. The traditional color arrangement is fulfilled with great professional-
ism and creates a common impact from a distance or close by. By fulfilling the traditional color arrangement in the color
design, the free choice of color can be felt as one of the typical characteristics for Tabriz carpets.
The carpet’s pile is woolen and its wrap and weft are made of cotton. It is in excellent condition. The carpet has an artistic,
historic, and scientific importance.
