The date 1233AH appears at the bottom part of the carpet, to the right
of the middle field. This carpet was woven on the basis of the “Gara-
chop” composition of the Gazakh group. In the center of the brick-
colored middle field, a large gyol (medallion) is depicted on a white
setting. Inside the center of the gyol, a medallion with blue hooked
edges is represented. A pair of red goshabuynuz (double-horned) mo-
tifs specific to the Gazakh carpets of Azerbaijan is depicted inside the
medallion. There is also a rhombus among the goshabuynuz motifs.
Sallama (hanging) motifs specific to Gedebey carpets are employed
on the corners of the center medallion. There are s-shaped elements
to the right and left of the medallion at the bottom. Red hooked ele-
ments on a white setting point towards the center from the right and
left corners of the medallion. The edges of the medallion are designed
with sichandishi (mouse teeth) inside red, green, cream, navy blue,
and brick-colored stripes. The navy blue lines with white sichandishi
that are attached to the outside walls of the medallion are reminiscent
of a jejim and give the carpet an inimitable beauty. Double rectangu-
lar geometric medallions with cream-colored backgrounds specific to
Gazakh carpets are portrayed at the top and bottom of the carpet. This
geometric medallion was decorated with hooks pointing opposite di-
rections on all four sides. Each of these elements is adorned with nine
eight-sided star motifs. Five-, six-, eight-, and twelve-pointed star mo-
tifs are encountered in all areas of decorative applied art in Azerbai-
jan (including pottery, coppersmith work, wood carving, embroidery,
and jewelry). The history of these motifs is very old. Star images ap-
pear on many objects found during archeological excavations of cities
of the Middle Ages. The star motifs on the copper dish belonging to
the 12th-13th centuries that were found during archeological excava-
tions conducted in the Gala area of Gabala in 1960 are evidence of this.
The gaps in the center field are filled with different geometric, s-like,
dordunsur (four elements), and other classic elements. The wide main
border with a cream-colored background is decorated with zulfelem
motifs. Taking into account slight variations, these motifs are encoun-
tered on carpets belonging also to Guba and Shirvan. The main border
is surrounded by navy-blue background guard stripes at the top and
blue background guard stripes on the right, left, and bottom. Navy
blue, yellow, and brick-colored wavy lines decorate the inside of these
borders. The edges of the guard stripes are adorned with red and yel-
low sichandishi on the inside and outside.
