The central field of this chul with an original ornament design and complex composition has been divided into motifs
trimmed with horizontal motifs. There are depictions of roosters trimmed with dark blue, red, and green inside the motif
placed in the center of the central field. The elements with scalloped lower and upper sections and white dots are repre-
sented on these stylized roosters. The blank spaces of the motifs are decorated with figures called two-headed four-footed
“qoshaqush” (twin birds) figures. There are bird figures in the blank spaces of the motif and on the spine of the roosters.
Bird depictions are found mostly in the carpets and carpet items among Azerbaijani decorative-applied art samples. Tri-
bes such as “Qushchu qabilasi” (Poultry Tribe), “Qartal qabilasi” (Eagle Tribe), and “Khoruz qabilasi” (Rooster Tribe) were
well known among the nations that lived in the territory of Azerbaijan in ancient times and the birds of the tribes served
as their totems.
The “qoshaqush” depictions are represented in the narrow motifs in the upper and lower area of the central field of the
chul. “Qoshaqush” figures are trimmed with red, dark blue, and green in the motif in the upper section and with red, dark
blue, yellow, green, and dark red in the motif in the lower section. The blank spaces of the white motifs of the chul are filled
with small barely visible “four elements” and broken lines. The motifs are separated from one another with strips trimmed
with z-shaped elements called “ordek” (duck) and triangular elements. The elements in the strips are trimmed with light
red, yellow, dark blue, blue, dark red, green, and orange. The edges of the strips are surrounded with chains trimmed with
broken lines. Strips trimmed with the same motifs are repeated in the upper, lower, right, and left sections.
Rhomboidal net-like patterns are trimmed in the central field at the upper section of the chul. Small dark red, red, gre-
en, and blue-colored elements, which are characteristic for Nakhchivan carpets, are depicted inside the net-like patterns.
Rhomboidal net-like patterns are combined with small hexagonal elements.
The color design of the chul has been represented with pleasantly contrasting and quiet colors. A special color harmony
has been created as a result of the color coordination. National tradition embellished throughout the centuries helped create
striking artistic designs in the ornaments and the professional color design.
The chul was woven from high-quality wool yarn. The condition of the chul is complete. The chul is of artistic, historical,
and scientific importance.
