Azerbaijani carpets / TABRIZ GROUP
The artistic composition of the carpet consists of a middle area and a border.
In the center of the ivory background middle field, there is a large polygonal zigzag-like medallion filled with red, green,
yellow, and white flowers.
There are two dark blue “qubba” (dome) on the upper and lower parts of the medallion. The carpet makers usually use
the “qubba” elements as joining elements. There are different rhomboidal shapes on the upper and lower parts where the
“qubba” meet the medallions. The medallions are encircled with black, white, and red “su” (water).
On the ivory middle field, there are red, dark and light green, yellow, white and dark blue flowers arranged symmetri-
cally or asymmetrically.
The flower images are designed with natural colors so that they seem lively at first sight. These elements are placed along
thick schemes along the middle field and lend order to the carpet. On the second row of the upper area of the middle field
and the last row of the lower and the upper part of the middle field, there are lilies depicted horizontally and on the other
side there are roses and carnations.
Madakhil with dark blue and brown cogs surrounds the middle field. The cogs on the upper and lower parts are colored
red and dark blue. The madakhils are completed with red “su” on the outside and white “su” on the inside.
The border composition of the carpet is very rich in color arrangement and composition.
The main red background border is designed with elements called “nalbakigul” (saucer flower). The five- and eight-petal
flowers decorating the main border are red, dark blue, white, yellow, dark and light green and the branches connecting
them are green. These borders are typical in the carpets belonging to the Karabakh group.
The main border is enclosed by blue lace decorated in dark blue, red, and white flowers on the inside and outside. The
lace is completed with dark blue and light blue “su.” The color discrepancy typical of Tabriz carpets is fulfilled profession-
ally in this carpet. The soft and neutral ivory color of the middle field is combined with contrasting colors (especially red,
green, and dark blue) and as a result, it gives the composition a vivacious appearance. On the other side, the colors of the
elements in the middle field are repeated in the colors inside the medallion, which draw attention to the perfect color ar-
rangement.
The color arrangement of the carpet was designed along natural principles, creating a mutual impact when viewed from
a short or long distance. The carpet has an artistic, historic, and scientific importance. It is in excellent condition. Its pile is
woolen and its wrap and weft are made of cotton.
