Azerbaijani carpets / TABRIZ GROUP
The composition of the carpet consists of a middle area and a border.
On the ivory background middle field there is a large vase and two large and four
small tree images.
On the top of the middle field there is a medallion with petals in the center. On the
left and right sides of the medallion there are trees bending down toward the inside. The
top of the ivory background middle field is altar-shaped and its edges have petals. On the
branches in the lower part there are bird figures bending their heads down colored
in pink, dark red, white, and black. On the background below, there are parrots and
their fledglings. The trunk and branches are designed in light brown and reddish-
brown.
The flowers on the branches have three, four, five, and six petals. They are de-
signed in dark red-yellow, light green-brown-yellow, dark blue-yellow, light
brown-dark blue, and white. The leaves are brown-red-yellow, light green-yellow,
and brown-light green.
The edges of the leaves, branches, and flowers are enclosed with black “su”. Inside the
flower vase at the bottom of the carpet there is a bouquet of flowers. In color and shape
these flowers are the same as the ones depicted on the tree. There is a pair of handles in
the lower center of the vase. These handles bring a special appearance to the vase and
resemble a leafy and flowery wreath. The outer part of the vase is decorated with the
flowers and leaves typical for Tabriz carpets. Under the trees on the left and right of
the vase there is a couple of birds depicted in dark and light brown, dark red, white,
and black.
The birds depicted on the trees in the upper area of the carpet are the same as the birds
in the lower area. Under the trees, there are baby deer holding their heads upward. The
top corners of the middle field have the same color as the medallion and vase and are filled
with branches of three-, four-, and five-petal flowers.
On the top corners there is a dark blue medallion with petals on the edges. On the tree
branches inside the medallion, two birds sitting face-to-face are depicted. The meadow un-
der the tree is light green, the trunk and branches of the tree are light brown, and the leaves
are light green and yellow.
The edges of the meadow, the branches, the flowers, and the leaves are designed with dark red
“su,” the medallion’s edge is designed in black-ivory and red “su,” and the field extending to-
wards the corners are designed with flowers. The dark blue main border is decorated with flow-
ery and leafy branches. The branches spreading from the corners of the border in the right and
left join with the branches in the center of left, right, up-
per, and lower borders and enrich the general composi-
tion of the border. The flowers, birds, and leaves on the
branches enliven the border and hint at the arrival of spring. The main border is
enclosed with dark red minor borders decorated with flowery and leafy branches
arranged on both sides. The minor borders are enclosed with ivory madakhils
with ivory and light green “mollabashi” (chamomile) elements on both sides. The
edges of “mollabashi” and madakhils are completed with black “su.” The color dis-
crepancy typical for Tabriz carpets was retained with a great professionalism in this
carpet. The soft neutral colors applied on the carpet are joined to the contrasting colors
and as a result, a very attractive vision appears on both sides and the repetition of the
colors of the calming elements provides a high quality color arrangement. Due to the great
professionalism in its coloring, this carpet is an example of a precious product produced
for marketing that also delights customers.
The pile of the carpet is woolen and its wrap and weft are made of cotton. It is in excel-
lent condition. The carpet has an artistic, historic, and scientific importance. Some parts
were repaired.
