The description of famous epos on Yusuf Prophet has been given on the carpet. The stories have been stated in rich and
dynamic manner. The description of events, characters has been given in every detail. The hunting scenes have been de-
scribed in repeated succession in the major border to increase the beauty of the carpet and protect the dynamics given in
the story. The faces of many people described as a result of delicate work of weavers were woven exactly and figuratively.
The colours used in the artistic description of religious subject serve to convey the main meaning.
Yusif’s childhood, his father Yagub, Benyamin, one of his native brother and his nine stepbrothers have been described in
the scene. The light has been described around the head of Yusuf that this light is the sign of prophecy. Yagub has the same
sign too. In this scene Yagub is holding Yusuf by the hand and showing him to his other sons and declaring that he will be
prophet after him. Buildings, trees and all spaces described in the picture show that the events happened in the territory
(country) of Kanan.
In the description in the centre the brothers are asking Yagub’s permission to take Yusuf to walk, but they are taking him
to the desert. Nine of stepbrothers other than Benyamin took Yusuf to the desert and throw him into a well. It has been
noted in the poems in the edges of the carpet that the caravan will come and save Yusuf from that well and sell him to the
governor.
The description in the upper scene shows that Yusuf is being appointed as vizier for Egypt. Firstly, Yusif is carrying tea in
Egypt after he was sold to the governor. When he gave tea to Zuleykha, she fell in love with Yusuf. When Egypt’s governor
was aware that Zuleykha loved Yusuf he put him to the prison. Following the death of Egypt’s governor IV Amin Hotem
came to the power. At one night, new governor saw in his dream that 7 fat and 7 lean cows drank water from Nil river. This
dream worried him and wanted to know its meaning. Though a lot of people interpreted this dream he did not agree with
them. One of governor’s men recommended him Yusuf and said that there was a boy named Yusuf who can interpret this
dream. He was taken to the governor’s palace. Yusuf interpreted the dream as follow:
7 fat cows is a symbol of plenty. The plenty will be observed in the country for 7 years. 7 lean cowmeans drought and hun-
ger. After such wise interpretation, the governor appointed Yusuf as his successor to the throne. And he asked to construct
warehouses in all areas of the country and filled them with wheat for the country not suffers in the years of famine. After
7 years of plenty, 7 years of famine started. This starvation happened in Kanan. Then, Prophet Yagub’s sons heard that the
wheat warehouses were constructed to store up for the period of famine. After hearing it they went to Egypt to bring wheat
for their country. They were not allowed to enter the city when they reached to Egypt. Yusuf also became aware of this
information. Yusuf ordered the doorkeepers to take them beside him. Though he knew his brothers but they did not know
Yusuf. Yusuf gave wheat to them and said that you had little brother; if you did not take him together with you, I would
not give wheat to you. After some period, they should go to Egypt once more. They asked Yagub to allow taking Benyamin
together with them. But Yagub was worried that they might lose Benyamin as Yusuf. Yagub did not allow them. But they
implored that if they did not take him, Egypt’s governor would not give them wheat. Then Yagub agreed with reluctance.
Prophet Yusuf welcomed them respectably for Benyamin and forgave his brothers who threw him into the well. Then they
understood that he was Yusuf and they implored to forgive their fault.
Why prophet Yusuf left the ter-
ritory of Kanan.
When he became light darkness,
(after his going Kanan’s gain and
abundance went too.)
Yusif’s father Yagub was like the
candle without moth (when Yusif’s
brothers took Yusif under the pretext
of walking, he had a presentiment that
Yusif would never return)
After losing Yusif, Yagub had
not night and day; everything
was darkness for him.
Yusif was parted from his father
under the pretext of walking; Yagub
felt that Yusuf would not return.
The governor of Kanan in the
well resembled the moonlight
in the water.
