1832), who was the
successor of the Qajar
throne, is depicted.
The following figures are depicted on the carpet: on the main border’s upper right corner Safa-
vid shah Tahmasib I (1514-1576), in the second medallion from the left shah Abbas himself, and
in the third medallion Dervish Ali Yusif, who was one of the famous dervishes and scientists of
his time. These depictions are repeated on the main border.
On the top of the middle field in the center, there is a picture of a crown. The crown symbolizes reign and kingdom.In
the gaps between the middle field and the border, animals are depicted. Shah Abbas I was a skillful hunter. The various
animal and bird images on the carpet suggest his hunting ability.
On the top of the ivory background there is a three-line inscription:
“The first shah who developed his country is Kaiumers
“There is no other conqueror as clever and merciful as shah Hushang
“There is no other shah as handsome and lucky as Tahmuras.”
These are the shahs described in Ferdowsi’s “Shahnameh.”
Twelve color shades are used on the carpet. The arrangement of colors is designed professionally and the color harmony
is fulfilled with traditional patterns.
The pile of the carpet is made of wool, while its wrap and weft are cotton. It is in a perfect condition. The carpet has ar-
tistic, historic, and scientific importance. It was woven with a technique called “shirazi dolama.” The loom of the carpet is
beige, its fringes are knotted, one side is two centimeters and the other side is 1.8 centimeters. Its thickness is 65x80.
