This carpet was woven in Mohuj village, Guba region. The carpet has manuscript
elements. It has been woven from wool. Its weaving technique is “turkbaf.” Guba
carpet weavers call this carpet “Goshagol Zeykhur.” The carpet was woven accor-
ding to classic Guba tradition, consisting of seven border strips and an ivory central
field. The carpet has been woven at a professional level. The patterns decorating
the border strip are symmetrical in their form and colors. Some border patterns are
in the form of plants and geometrical elements. Some border strips are repeated
symmetrically. The large border strip of the carpet is a result of its large size and it
makes the carpet more magnificent.
Ten uneven gols have been woven on the central field of the carpet. These gols
contain arms placed densely in horizontal, diagonal, and vertical directions. Some-
times these diagonal arms are called “Khatai,” related to the strips on the turbans
belonging to the Qizilbash in the Middle Ages. Another interpretation of these gols
considers them eight-pointed stars related to astral beliefs.
At the same time the plant elements and branches have been depicted on the light-
colored central field of the carpet. Each pattern carries a particular form, which has
become a weaving classic based on local traditions throughout the centuries. Plant
elements woven on this carpet can be considered a continuation of this tradition.
Branches reaching to eternity and various flowers woven with brightly colored
yarns are signs of paradise. According to Islam, every flower has its own mission
before the creator. They bow before God to forgive human sins. From this point of
view, the plant elements on “Zeykhur” carpets are seen as though they are perfor-
ming their sacred mission.
No repair or restoration work has been conducted on the carpet. The carpet is in
excellent condition. The carpet is of artistic, historic, and scientific importance.
