The artistic structure of this richly colored carpet consists of a central field and bor-
ders. A “mehrab” (shrine) has been depicted on the top of the central field with red
padding. “Mehrab” images on namazlyg carpets are of different forms. The “meh-
rab” on namazlygs woven by folk masters are depicted with dotted lines while they
are curvilinear on namazlygs designed by professional artists. There are red stepped
motifs on a white background on the edges of the “mehrab.”
The gaps on the upper corners of the central field of the carpet have been filled
with four-petal flowers. The flowers have been embroidered with blue-red, dark
blue-white-red, yellow-red-dark blue, and dark blue-blue-red. The elements of the
same color and form are repeated in the “mehrab” as well. Classic elements with
scalloped edges have been embroidered in hexagonal geometric elements on the
central field of the carpet. These elements have been designed with white, blue, and
yellow on white, yellow, and blue padding. Triangle tree motifs have been placed
in the small barely visible diamond-shaped elements in the gaps between the hex-
agonal elements. There are horizontal flowered leafy boughs on the lower part of
the central field. The central field is covered by “zanjira,” embroidered with wavy
and “doganag” (hook-like) motifs with white padding. The wavy lines are united
with one another by leaves. The primary border of the ivory padding carpet has
been ornamented with motifs called “chakhmag.” This type of motif occurs more
frequently on carpets in the Baku and Karabakh groups. The “chakhmag” motifs
have been embroidered with red, yellow, dark blue, ivory, cornelian, and blue. The
gaps of the primary border have been filled with small, scalloped-edge elements.
The primary border has been covered by minor borders on both sides. Diamond-
shaped motifs have been embroidered in the minor borders. The elements of similar
form and color as those on the gaps of the central field of the carpet are repeated on
the minor borders. The edges of the outer minor border are completed by cornelian
and blue “su” (water) and the edges of the inner minor border are completed in blue
and cornelian. The edges of the carpet have been covered by white, barely visible
z-shaped elements on the outside. These elements are reminiscent of “sichandishi”
(mouse teeth) motifs.
The color design of the carpet is clearly professional. By harmonic
ally coordinating the colors with one another, an amazing and rare
“namazlyg” has been made.
The pile and weft of the carpet are wool and the warp is cotton. The storage con-
dition of the carpet is adequate. The carpet is of artistic, historical, and scientific
importance.
