Diamond-shaped medallions, protruded-edge quadrangular, hexagonal, and ho-
oked elements as well as elements called “kapanak” (butterfly) typical for Shirvan
carpets have been depicted on the central field of this dark-blue background car-
pet. “Kapanak” motifs are deemed to be among the main elements of the carpet.
Eight-petal flowers embroidered with yellow, red, white, yellow-cornelian, green-
cornelian, sumac-green, blue-cornelian, and sumac-white have been placed on the
upper, lower, right, and left sections of the central field. The gaps of the central field
have been filled with small four-, six-, and eight-petal flowers, as well as s-, x-, and
u-shaped motifs, and connected triangles, six-corner stars, and other motifs. White
scallops encircle the central field.
The white-padded main border of the carpet has been trimmed with motifs called
“horuk” (braid). The “horuk” motifs have been designed with cornelian, dark blue,
blue, sumac, dark and light green. Small diamond-shaped motifs have been embroi-
dered on these motifs and triangular motifs embroidered on the border’s gaps. The
color of the “horuk” motifs on the border is repeated in the filler motifs.
The inner minor border of the carpet has been embroidered with small classical
elements typical for Shirvan carpets. These elements have been designed with su-
mac, dark blue, yellow, white, blue, light and dark green. “Medakhil,” inside which
four-petal flowers have been embroidered, surround the border.
Small eight-angle, connected triangular motifs have been depicted on the outer
minor border. The colors used in the motifs of the inner minor border are repeated
in the motifs of the outer minor border. The edges of the outer minor border are
supplemented by z-shaped elements.
The carpet has a very rich color design. The colors have been matc-
hed in traditional harmony.
The pile and warp of the carpet is wool and the weft is cotton. The storage condi-
tion of the carpet is adequate. The carpet is of artistic, historic, and scientific impor-
tance.
