“Maraza” carpets have several different compositions.
The composition of the central field of this carpet consists of broad stripes (rap-
ports) divided vertically. Carpets of this type have been woven not only in the car-
pet-weaving settlements of Maraza, but also in the villages of Goylar, Chukhan-
li, and Nabur. Carpets of this type are sometimes mistakenly called “Gabistan” in
many trade markets, however, foreign art critics call carpets woven with this com-
position “Marazali.”
Complete “buta” images and one incomplete “buta” are depicted on the red-
padded rapports of the carpet. Images of a scalloped leaf, stylized bird and animal
images are depicted on the gaps between the “buta” images. Small rhomboidal ele-
ments and four-petal flowers have been placed inside the “buta” images.
Typical for “Maraza” carpets, motifs on dark-blue-padded rapports
have been embroidered in yellow. The spaces of the rapports have
been filled with images of a scalloped leaf and stylized bird and ani-
mal images.
The scallopped leaves have been trimmed with red, blue, and yellow. The same
colors are repeated in the color design of the border motifs. The scallopped leaves
are laid out horizontally for the large leaves and vertically for the small ones. Red-
padded “medakhil” surround the central field of the carpet. There are small leaves
arranged in a sloping direction in the medakhils.
The motifs on the red-padded main borders of the carpet are similar to the motifs
on the rapports found on the dark-blue field. The main border has been encircled
by “medakhils” trimmed with wavy lines. The gaps of the wavy lines have been
embroidered with “dord unsur” (four element) and “heyvanbashi” (animal head)
elements.
The relatively narrow border of the carpet has been trimmed with motifs called
“qaychibalig” (scissor fish) and “shamdan” (candlestick).
The relatively narrow border has also been surrounded by “medakhils” trimmed
with wavy lines. The “medakhil” on the selvage (self-finished edge) of the carpet is
similar to other “medakhils.”
The color design of the carpet reflects the principles of regularity. Red, dark blue,
and yellow are the main colors. Other colors are used less.
The pile and warp of the carpet is wool and the weft is cotton. The storage condi-
tion of this carpet is adequate. The carpet is of artistic, historic, and scientific impor-
tance.
