ated from zigzag “gyol” and they repeated each other in
the horizontal and vertical directions along the field of
carpet. Round and long flower elements of ties are con-
nected to corner in symmetric form. These elements are
called “tie” in the Azerbaijani carpet weaving. Descrip-
tion and artistic features of ornamental carpets are given
in the third section.
Besides their piled carpets Tabriz carpet school was
also famous for its flat-weave carpets at all times.
Such specimens woven in Tabriz group have a simple
and less ornamented composition, and ornaments at-
tracting attentions with optimist colors, as well as vivid
stylizing power. As a rule, colored stripes, quadrangle,
rhombic, cross, twisted lines and other geometric figures
are seen in their composition. Various schematic-condi-
tional ornaments making the carpets’ pattern field, in
reality express the items existing in real life and demon-
strate the talent of the masters to give the general artistic
shape and form to the things they face. One of other or-
namental features of the Azerbaijani flat-weave carpets
is their relation with other ornamental elements as nabat
ornaments on the piled carpets and description of every
ornamental element comparatively freely.
The most spread type of pile carpets is palas. Palas are
usually decorated with horizontal stripes in all Azerbai-
