s-shaped motifs that are interpreted as a symbol of water. Among weavers, the eight snake-like motifs surrounding the rectangular ele-
ments are called “cloud.” The elements of “cloud” are encountered in Chinese-Uyghur decorative art of the Middle Ages, especially in
miniatures and pottery. The empty spaces of the gyols are filled with different floral, geometric, and classic elements. On the outside in
the lower and upper parts, the edges of the gyols are surrounded with hooks that are considered protective elements. The alternating co-
lors create a delightful vision. On the right and left of the gyols, there are dordunsur (four elements) motifs arranged in a chainlike link.
The wide white background border of the carpet is decorated with dark brown, green, light blue, navy blue, and yellow zulfele elements.
These elements are encountered on carpets belonging to the Guba and Shirvan Groups. Some weavers call these elements “border with
hair.” The border is surrounded on both sides with madakhils represented in light blue, red, and yellow incomplete lines.
