The date 1286 AH appears in the upper section of
the carpet.
The main decoration of this cornelian background
carpet represents large rhombic gyols (medallions)
located adjacently along the carpet in the middle
field. The center of the gyols is adorned with geo-
metric motifs. The middle field of the central gyol is
light blue and the middle fields of the gyols at the
top and bottom are of cornelian color. These cor-
nelian fields are designed with green hooked ele-
ments and the hooked elements in the middle field
of the central gyol are decorated in light blue. There
are depictions of humans and deer on the right and
left of the gyol at the top of the middle field. Two
fawns are depicted in the lower section of the gyol.
The image of a stylized four-legged fictional bird
with its face looking towards the border wall is rep-
resented in the lower section of the middle field on
the right. The red and light blue hooked motifs in-
side the central gyol are repeated on the gyols at the
top and bottom in red and green. Green s-shaped
elements are represented on the white background
along the edges of the gyols. Red su (water) sur-
rounds the edges of these elements. Motifs remi-
niscent of ancient Greek architectural designs are
depicted on the edges of the middle field. These
white, yellow, green, and light blue motifs are en-
countered on Karabakh, Gazakh, and Guba carpets
of Azerbaijan. Changal (fork), dordunsur (four
elements), s-shaped, curly, sickle-shaped, crown-
shaped, and other motifs fill the empty spaces of the
carpet’s middle field. The main white background
border is decorated with goshabuynuz (double-
horned) motifs and other motifs characteristic of
middle borders. These elements are frequently
encountered on Ganja’s “Garachop” carpets. The
main border is surrounded with green madakhils
decorated with mollabashi (chamomile) elements
on the outside and light blue on the inside. The
madakhils are completed with cornelian and yel-
low sichandishi (mouse teeth). This carpet, with its
geometric and classic composition, is distinguished
from other carpets of the Iravan Group due to its
uniqueness.
