The carpet was woven in Imamgulukand village, Gusar region. The carpet has
manuscript elements. It has been woven from wool. Small carpets in this size were
called “pushtu” in former times. These small carpets were woven for the wall and
the back part of a couch. This carpet has been woven according to classic Guba wea-
ving tradition. It consists of a border and an ivory central field. The carpet has been
woven professionally. The patterns decorating the border strip are symmetric in
form and color. The border patterns are reminiscent of stylized flowers and branches
separate these flowers from one another. The border strip of the carpet is original.
Although “Zeykhur” carpets conserve an artistic tradition from the standpoint of
style, they are new from the standpoint of performing style.
Two uneven gols were woven in the central field of the carpet. These gols consist
of arms placed densely in horizontal, diagonal, and vertical directions. Such diago-
nal arms are sometimes called “Khatai,” related to the strips on turbans belonging
to the Qizilbash in the Middle Ages. Another interpretation of these gols considers
them eight-pointed stars related to astral beliefs.
In addition to the plant elements, transverse s-shaped branches are depicted on the
light colored central field of the carpet. Each pattern evolves form throughout the
centuries and becomes a classic on the basis of local traditions. Plant elements wo-
ven on this carpet may be considered a continuation of this tradition. The branches
symbolize eternity and various flowers woven with bright colored yarns are signs
of paradise. According to Islam, every flower has its own mission. They bow before
God asking forgiveness of human sins. From this point of view, plant elements on
“Zeykhur” carpet are seen as performing their missions in sacred space.
No repair or restoration work has been conducted on the carpet. The carpet is in
excellent condition. The carpet is of artistic, historic, and scientific importance.
