The “Ugah” carpet is woven in the form of “kenare” in the Guba group. It has a
fine weaving style. It has been woven from wool by the “turkbaf” weaving techni-
que. It has a high density. The carpet was woven in Ugah village, Shabran region.
The “Ugah” carpet consists of a central field and border. The border strip contains
three borders. Two of them have symmetric madakhil where cloves have been desc-
ribed on the dark blue background. The major border consists of “kufi” that are well
known in the Guba carpet schools. There is no doubt that this border strip is called
art by all carpet collectors.
There are many calligraphic forms such as “sul,” “nastalig,” and “reyhani” in Ara-
bic calligraphy. Among them, “kufi” is a geometrical script form that uses broken
lines. Samples from the Koran, religious books, and prayers were written only in
“kufi.” Great changes happened in art when Islam was widespread. Decorative cal-
ligraphic script style is used widely in decorative art. Only from this period were
prayers woven in “kufi” style on carpets. This tradition became popular and chan-
ged into a schematic style by the weavers. Throughout the centuries, “kufi” border
strip are a tradition on carpets.
The carpet is the embodiment of tenderness and slimness in its structure. It appe-
ars that a net composition was built on the carpet by knots.
The central field of the “Ugah” carpet is very sizeable; it has been completely trim-
med with grape leaves. The difference among these leaves is in their color. White,
yellow, blue, orange, red tones alternate with one another. Sign-like squares and tri-
angles with hooked edges have been woven among them. One of the details making
the carpet more attractive is the weaving of two human silhouettes in the upper right
side. One of these humans is three-fingered. One of these depictions may coincide
with images on earthenware of the Neolithic Age. These humans grab the attention
with their archaic and primitive forms.
Some repair and restoration work has been conducted on the border windings of
the carpet. The carpet is in excellent condition. The carpet is of artistic, historic, and
scientific importance.
