This Shirvan Group carpet has a unique compositional structure. In addition
to small flowers or small elements, large gyols (medallions) or khonchas (panels)
represent themain decoration of themiddle fields on these carpets. Two large “gyol”
have been placed on the central field of this blue background carpet. There is an
octagonal medallion inside the red “gyol” with red padding. The background of the
medallions has been embroidered with black and the elements inside it with yellow,
cornelian, and white. Inside the “gyol,” triangle elements divided into two parts
and barely visible diamond-shaped elements are distinguished for their originality.
The edges of the medallions have been covered by a border with white padding,
embroidered with light-green and red motifs on the inside. The medallions have
been completed with yellow and black z-shaped elements on the outside. There are
diamond-shaped “gubba” (dome) on the upper and lower parts and two medallions
are united in the center. The “gubba” that are included in the main elements are
usually placed on the top end of the “gyol” in carpet composition. Carpet specialists
call these elements “bashlig” (head) or “heykalbashi” (image head). These elements
serve a uniting function and are used freely. Four- and eight-petal flowers, s-shaped
stylized birds, and other classic elements have been depicted in the gaps of the red
background “gyol.” These elements have been embroideredwithwhite, yellow, blue,
and black. The edges of the “gyol” are stepped and protruded. The protrusions and
steps
have been completed with red, yellow, black, green, and white “su” (water).
The gaps of the central field have been filled with four- and eight-petal flowers, and
s-shaped and diamond-shaped elements. These elements have been embroidered
with red, green, yellow, brown, white, and cornelian.
The primary border of the white background carpet has been ornamented with
cornelian, blue, dark blue, yellow, green, and lilac-colored motifs called “chakhmag”
(lock). There are stylized bird images on the triangular parts. The primary border has
been covered by a cornelian border on the inside and by minor borders with black
padding on the outside. Eight-petal flowers embroidered with cornelian, ivory, dark
blue, green, yellow, brown, and white colors are depicted on the minor borders. The
minor border with cornelian padding on the outside and the minor border with
black padding on both sides has been completed by “sichandishi” (mouse teeth).
The colors on this carpet are numerous, containing a complicated ornamental
design. Ten colors have been used on this carpet. The colors used on the central field
are repeated on the border motifs. The color design on the carpet has been made on
the basis of traditional agreements.
The pile and warp of the carpet are made of wool and the weft of
cotton. The storage condition of the carpet is adequate. The carpet is of
artistic, historical, and scientific importance.
