The name of this carpet is related to the village of Duruja in the Gabala region.
Despite the fact that these carpets have been woven in different places, they are all
called “Duruja.”
The main ornament of this dark-blue background carpet consists of three large
diamond-shaped “gyol” (medallion) placed on the central field. The edges of the
“gyol” have been embroidered with scallops that are characteristic for Kurdamir
carpets.
The “gyol” on the upper and lower sections have the same shape and have been
designed in identical colors, while the “gyol” on the center has been designed with
different colors.
The “gyol” on the upper and lower parts are formed with padding of a discolored
red-pink color and the “gyol” on the center was formed with yellow padding. Four-
petal flowers have been embroidered on stripes with dark-blue padding on the edges
of the hexagonal medallion inside the “gyol.” The cornelian stripe of the medallion
inside the center “gyol” has been embroidered with quadrangular elements. The
inside of these quadrangular elements has been divided into triangles.
Small “gyol” with scalloped edges, identical in form to the large “gyol,” have been
depicted on the gaps of the central field of the carpet and on the lower part of the
“gyol” placed on the center. On the gaps of the central field, tree motifs are depicted.
Four-petal geometric flowers have been embroidered on the cross boughs of the tree.
There are hooked elements embroidered with cornelian and ivory on the lower
edges of the central field.
The border section of the carpet contains a complicated composition. The
central border with ivory padding has been ornamented with eight-petal flowers
embroidered with yellow, orange, cornelian, dark-blue, and pink. There are boughs
on the gaps between the flowers. The central border has been encircled on both sides
by minor borders with dark blue background.
The minor borders have been ornamented with elements embroidered with red,
orange, ivory, yellow, white, and pink “buynuz” (horn) motifs that are barely visible.
The minor borders with brick-pink padding have been embroidered with wavy
x-shaped boughs. The boughs are depicted in dark-blue, the flowers in cornelian,
dark blue, light green, and light brown, and the leaves in white. “Medakhil” (income,
used to describe thin stripes) with cornelian background covering the primary and
minor borders have been ornamented with barely visible likeness-like motifs. The
likeness-like motifs have been completed with dark blue, ivory, light brown, and
white, while the edges are complemented with pink and ivory “su” (water).
The carpet contains numerous colors. The colors have been
professionally used and a special harmony has been created as a result
of the alternation of different colors.
The pile and warp of the carpet are of wool and the weft is of cotton.
The storage condition of the carpet is excellent. The carpet is of artistic,
historical, and scientific importance.
