In the central field of this light red background kilim, large “gyol” (medallion)
arranged vertically have been depicted. The “gyols” are made of a dark blue, yel-
low, and turquoise background. Medallions with hook-like selvages (self-finished
edges) are placed within the “gyols.” The medallion selvages are staggered. Square-
shaped elements trimmed with blue-green-dark-blue, yellow-red-green-dark-blue
colors reaching from the top towards the bottom of the central field join the “gyols”
of different colors to each other and give a special vision to the general composition
of the central field.
The gaps in the left and right of the central field have been filled with classical
elements called “kilimgulu” (kilim flower). These elements have been arranged on
different backgrounds inside the small hexagonal medallions.
The color of the “kilimgulu” has given a special beauty to the carpet
and changed its overall appearance a little.
The central border of the dark-blue background carpet has been decorated with
various classic elements specific to Shirvan kilims.
The central border is surrounded with borders of sugar-colored background on
the inside and borders of yellow background on the outside. The color of the sugar-
colored border motifs is identical to the color of the motifs in the central field.
There are “bean-shaped” motifs joined to each other with wavy lines in the yellow
background border. These motifs are displayed in red and brown. The selvages of
the borders are completed with scallops.
This carpet has an original color arrangement typical of kilims included in the
Shirvan group. This kilim has been made of yarn twisted from wool of high quality.
The storage condition of this carpet is adequate. The carpet is of artistic, historic,
and scientific importance.
