Tovuz District
Tovuz District
The Tovuz district is located in western
Azerbaijan. Its area is divided into three main
sections according to its geography:
Jeyranchol (the area located north of the Kur
River)
Khunam (the plains between the Kur river
and the northern foothills of the Lesser Caucasus
Mountains )
The northern foothills of the Lesser Caucasus
Mountains and the southern mountainous area.
Jeyranchol covers a large area that lies 150
kilometers from the shores of Mingechevir
in the south and east to the border with
the Republic of Georgia in the west.
Only the central part of this area is
included in the Tovuz district.
The geography and topographic
diversity of the Tovuz district give
rise to a climate complex. There
are three main climate zones:
Dry subtropics (covering
the Kur River valley and
known for mild winters and hot
summers)
Warm-hot and dry (covering
the plains of the region and areas
of 100 meter elevation where the
winter is mild but summer is
slightly hotter)
Mild and cold forest
(covering the mountainous area
from 200-1000 meter elevation
where summer is cool and winter
is slightly frosty)
The Tovuz district differs from other regions
in its flora and fauna. The gradation from
mountain ranges with foothills to flat plains
leads to a varied landscape and a range of
soil in the region. The alpine and subalpine
meadows stretch to the fields and plains. The
plants and animals in the forests and mountains
are plentiful. The grasses, flowers, blossoms,
and different kinds of plants spread, carpet-
like, in the meadows of the foothills of the
mountain lend a particular beauty to this
area.
The fauna and flora of Tovuz is very
rich. There are oak, beech, hornbeam,
walnut, ash, and ironwood trees, as well
as different wild fruit bushes in the mountains.
The “eldar shami” plant is considered rare,
protected in the Garayazi Reserve in the region
near Jeyranchol.
Other protected sites can be found in towns
from Govlar to Alakhol, including sites of
ancient Khina Deresi near Saratovka village
in the Gadabay region; 12
th
century mosques
and 17
th
century tombs in the village of Yabigli;
and ancient Caucasian Albanian temples with
their original architecture in the villages of
Garibli and Abdal. In addition, there are
holy and sacred places such as “Chinarli,”
“ Sinagli,” and “Hachagaya” nearby.
The “Gerib Seyid” sanctuary is located
along the Esrik River in the village of
Azapli. Other interesting sites include the
ancient settlement of “Torpaggala” on
the right-hand bank of the Kur River
12 kilometers from the region, the
19
th
century “Sultan Korpusu” on
the Akhinja River in the village of
Vahidli, and the “Gala duzu” in the
same area.
The origin of the name of the
Tovuz district has Turkish origins
and there are many mountains,
valleys, and springs here.The
soil contains different minerals
that give a specific coloring to the
flowers of this area.
Local customs, names, and traditions
were presented on the carpets.
