There are many ancient and historical
temples in Borchaly. During archeological
excavations, scientists discovered that some of
the temples in Borchaly are from the same time
period as “Dada Qorgud.” The significance
of the geographical location of Borchaly is
reflected in its proximity and natural gateway
to Turkey. The furthest mountainous outlying
region of Borchaly is Bashkechid. Bashkechid
is the main passage to Turkey. Gold and silver
goblets and even silver “satil” from the Skid
Turkic tribes were found in the early Iron Age
Archivan tombs in the Borchaly region. On the
tombs, engravings of deer and “heyet agaji”
were found, pointing to the presence of the
ancient Skid Turkic tribes.
The carpets of the Borchaly region have
a specific color harmony due to the natural
pigments obtained from fruits and plants
grown in this region. It is impossible to imagine
these carpets outside of the Gazakh-Borchaly
carpet group. The carpet products of this region
can be regarded as complex samples of graphic
handicrafts. Some representations have been
embodied in different ways over many years
and have become an inseperable part of the
handicraft and mastery of the graphic style
developed here.
The woolen yarn came from a specific
pedigreed sheep and weavers were able to
obtain different color harmonies according to
the density and consistency of the wool.
“Namazlyg” is one type of carpet that is
very common in this region. These complex
and simple composition carpets were woven to
represent people’s global outlook and Islamic
convictions.
The carpet trade in Tbilisi played a great
role in the development of Gazakh-Borchaly
carpets. There were special carpet shops in
“Sheytan” (devil) bazaar, and the carpets
woven in Borchaly and Gazakh were sold here
by merchants such as the Shikhiev brothers,
the Jalalovs, the Ahmadov brothers, Hajii
Muhammad Rzazade, and V. Nasibov. The
