The composition of the carpet consists of a center field
and a border.
Two large hexagonal gyols (medallion) are placed in
the middle field on a red setting. There are blue rectan-
gular medallions inside the gyols. In the center of the
medallions, dark red eight-pointed stars are designed.
The light blue and yellow triangular motifs inside the
stars are coordinated with motifs on the edges, making
the composition look more vigorous.
There are tree-like elements in the lower and upper
parts of the rectangular medallions. Jutbuynuz (double-
horned) motifs are arranged on the edges of these ele-
ments.
T-shaped motifs adorn the right and left sides of the
medallion. Tree-like and t-shaped motifs are designed
using light blue.
The empty spaces in the blue setting of the gyol are
filled with spiral, s-shaped, goshabuynuz (double-
horned), and four-petal flowers. The spiral-shaped
motifs are designed in red. Light blue is used for the
goshabuynuz motifs. Red, light and dark blue are em-
ployed for the s-shaped motifs. The flowers are deco-
rated with red, yellow, green, blue, and brown. The gos-
habuynuz motifs are used on ketebes with a navy blue
setting. The branches of the tree-like elements arranged
in the upper and lower parts of the gyol are hooked and
arrow-shaped.
The borders of the gyol are surrounded with jut-
buynuz and hooked motifs from the upper and lower
parts and with t-shaped motifs on the left and right.
Elements specific to Borchali carpets are used in the
empty spaces of the carpet’s middle field.
The white border of the carpet is decorated using ele-
ments with stepped edges. These elements are triangu-
lar. The edges of these elements are surrounded with
notches. Dark red, blue, light blue, yellow, and green
are used in the border motifs. The edges of the stepped
motifs and notches are finished with red and brown
su (water). Red, blue, light blue, and yellow elements
called mashal (torch) or shamdan (candlestick) adorn
the gaps in the border. The border is surrounded on two
sides by navy blue narrow stripes adorned with small
red and yellow rhombus elements. The edges of the nar-
row border are realized through incomplete lines of yel-
low and red. The smaller brick red border of the carpet
is designed with spiral-shaped motifs. There are buta
(almond-shaped) elements among these motifs. Blue
is employed for spiral-shaped and buta motifs while
brown is used for their edges. Small white, yellow,
red, brown, light blue, green, and navy blue butas are
placed inside the larger butas. The red field border is
surrounded from inside with a light blue field, a narrow
stripe designed using yellow and red floral elements on
the inside.
