Carpet. Wool. Pile-weave. Iravan group. Mehri, Zangazur, western Azerbaijan. 492x108. 1283 AH/1862 CE.
The date 1283 AH appears in two parts at the top of the carpet's middle field, below the second medallion from the top in the
empty space of the middle field.
Eleven medallions are placed in the navy blue background middle field of the carpet. Eight-petal flowers and rectangular
elements with bulged edges are depicted inside the medallions. There are motifs in the center of the eight-petal flowers that are
reminiscent of chalagan (kite) birds. These motifs are designed in yellow and blue on a brown background and red and yellow on
the black background. There are square motifs on the petals.
The medallions have backgrounds of brick red, blue, dark brown, orange, light brown, dark red, and light blue.
Blue stripes surround the edges of the brick red, dark red, light and dark brown, and pink medallions. The stripes are completed
with su (water) on both sides.
The edges of the blue and light blue medallions are surrounded with yellow stripes; the edges of the pink medallion with blue,
the edges of the dark brown medallion with light green stripes.
There are motifs along the edges of the medallions that are reminiscent of palmettos. These motifs are designed with blue,
orange, dark and light brown, white, dark green, navy blue, yellow, brick, and cream colors. The medallions are joined vertically
with elements similar to tree trunks. There are square ornaments inside these elements.
