At the top left of the carpet’s middle field, the date 1292 AH ap-
pears. Weavers in the Gazakh and Borchali districts of Azerbaijan
call this composition “Borchali.” Carpets called “Borchali” were
woven in different varieties. The composition of this carpet consists
of a middle field and border. One large and two smaller octagonal
gyols (medallion) represent the main decoration of the middle field.
A dordunsur (four elements) motif is located inside the cream-col-
ored background gyol in the center. Hooked elements are depicted
on the sections of this motif directed upwards and downwards.
The empty spaces inside the gyol are filled with small red and yel-
low geometric elements. These elements, called khal (birthmark)
among weavers, complete the view of the gyol. The edges of the
gyol are surrounded with cornelian zigzag elements on the inside
and green hooked elements on the outside. The hooked motifs sur-
rounding the gyol are interpreted as symbols protecting happiness
from malice and evil deeds. A cream-colored eight-pointed star is
depicted inside the smaller octagonal gyols at the top and bottom of
the middle field. A navy blue, cornelian, and yellow dordunsur ele-
ment is placed inside the star. The gyol is decorated with hooks on
the inside and outside. Cream-colored incomplete lines are depict-
ed between the hooked frames. The empty spaces of the carpet’s
middle field are filled with elements characteristic of Guba carpets,
but in the corners rectangular elements with hooked edges appear.
The cream-colored background border of the carpet is decorated by
triangular motifs with stepped edges. The empty spaces between
these motifs are characteristic of the middle border. The middle
border is surrounded with navy and light blue guard stripes. The
guard stripes are decorated with cream-colored and cornelian flow-
ers. The middle border is surrounded with cream-colored su and
the guard stripes are surrounded with incomplete lines. The car-
pet’s color harmony speaks of the weaver’s professionalism. The
consistent harmony of the contrasting colors contributed to a very
attractive color palette.
