The date 1296 AH is depicted at the
top of the carpet’s middle field, in-
side the navy blue scheme.
This carpet was woven on the ba-
sis of a kilim composition included
in Azerbaijan’s Shirvan Group. The
middle field of the carpet divides the
composition into schemes. Inside
the wide schemes with dark navy
blue background, gyols (medallion)
designed using motifs with hooked
edges specific to Gazakh kilims are
depicted. These motifs designed
with cornelian, cream, dark red,
light brown, green, and yellow are
clearly visible. Five whole and elev-
en partial medallions of white and
yellow background are placed in the
narrower brick-colored background
scheme in the center. The edges of
the medallion are depicted with
hooked motifs. The colors of the
hooks alternate in accordance with
the change of the background. The
empty spaces between the gyols are
filled with classic elements reminis-
cent of shamdan (candlestick), spe-
cific to kilims. Dark navy blue, red,
green, and yellow oblong s-shaped
motifs are designed inside the
stripes on both sides of the schemes.
S-shaped elements depicted in dif-
ferent varieties of decorative applied
arts in Azerbaijan have a very an-
cient history. These elements were
widespread during the late Bronze
Age and early Stone Age. These ele-
ments can also be seen in faience and
jewelry as well as in the ornamenta-
tion of metal objects. These elements
designed on a cream-colored back-
ground belong to the hooked bor-
der elements. These border elements
very occasionally are encountered
on Karabakh carpets. Incomplete
gyols designed with white, yellow,
green, navy blue, red, light brown,
and cornelian colors are depicted
inside the narrower stripes at the
top and bottom of the carpet. This
kilim with its simple technological
features is included in the group of
kilims with complex composition.
The attractive color arrangement on
this carpet and the very rich color
shades show a high professionalism.
A special harmony has been gener-
ated by contrasting warm with cold
colors and dark with light colors.
