The date 1292 AH appears at the top right section of the car-
pet’s middle field. This carpet was woven on the basis of Gazakh’s
“Goyjeli” composition. In the red background middle field of the
carpet, two octagonal medallions, one with stepped edges, are dis-
tributed. One rhombic element is placed inside the navy blue me-
dallion in the center and eight classic elements with stepped edges
are described along the edges. The empty spaces of the medallion
are filled with six small rectangular and one eight-angular motif.
The elements depicted inside the stepped motifs are encountered
on faience dishes and on antimony boards discovered during ex-
cavations of the kurgans (tomb) around Goygol city. Researchers
believe that these elements are cult symbols belonging to the ear-
ly agricultural age. In the lower and upper sections of the middle
field, inside the cream-colored field medallions, elements specific to
“Goyjeli” are depicted. The empty spaces of the medallion are filled
with eight-pointed stars and elements some weavers call gazayagi
(goose foot). At the top and lower parts of the medallion in the cen-
ter field of the carpet, small yellow octagonal medallions designed
with light blue hooks on the edges are depicted. Navy blue, white,
red, and light blue octagonal stars are designed inside the medal-
lions. In the top and bottom corners of the carpet’s middle field
on the green background, the medallions are depicted with stars.
The edges of these medallions are completed with white and red z-
shaped motifs. The empty spaces of the middle field are filled with
small four-petal flowers, rhombic, hooked, goshabuynuz (double-
horned), octagonal, wavy, and other motifs. The middle blue back-
ground border of the carpet is decorated with brown, yellow, red,
white, and green zigzag and shamdan (candlestick) motifs. Guard
stripes depicted with red and white mollabashi (chamomile) sur-
round the middle border. The outside border is finished with yel-
low and red incomplete lines; the internal border is finished with
yellow and red incomplete lines on the outside and green and red
incomplete lines on the inside. The edges of the incomplete lines are
designed with brown su (water).
