The date 1293 AH appears in the upper
left hand section of the carpet. Gazmali
kilim (worth visiting) elements encoun-
tered on the kilims of the first half of the
18th and 19th centuries are depicted on
the navy blue background middle field of
the carpet. These elements attract atten-
tion with their rhythmic horizontal and
slanted arrangement. These elements
are depicted asymmetrically on the car-
pet. Forty-five whole and six incomplete
half-rhombic motifs are placed along the
middle field. White field motifs are de-
signed horizontally and slanted using
the same color arrangement; orange and
dark red background motifs are designed
occasionally using the same arrangement
and at other times using different color
arrangements, changing alternately.
Among weavers, these elements are
called damga (stamp) and the kilim is
called damgali (stamped). These ele-
ments specific to Gazakh kilims are en-
countered on Pirebedil carpets from the
Guba district. This kilim with a dark
background and rich color shades is
distinguished from other kilims woven
in different districts of Azerbaijan in its
unique artistic design and color arrange-
ments. The edges of the kilim are deco-
rated with black.
The classic elements depicted in the
center of the motifs are repeated in the
motifs on the border as well. The clas-
sic elements on the border are attached
to each other, producing a zigzag look
along the edges of the carpet. A special
harmony is created on this carpet with
a rich mixture of color shades by chang-
ing the colors of the border elements.
Warm colors specific to districts with
harsh winters are complemented by cold
colors generating calming feelings and
thereby enhancing the artistic quality of
the carpet’s ornamentation. These kilims
belong to the earliest development peri-
od of carpet arts, utilize simple winding
techniques and rich color shades, and are
two-sided, making them very suitable
for household use. The kilims were used
in nomadic huts, shacks, and wedding
houses as internal decorations, flooring,
and outside covers.
