The date 1298AHappears in the center of the
carpet. This carpet was woven on the basis of
a Karabakh composition. The red background
kilim is divided into horizontal parts through
both large and small schemes. Similar com-
positions divided into horizontal parts are
specific to palases and zilis, considered classic
carpet samples. The wide schemes are green
while narrower schemes are red. White, cor-
nelian, light blue, yellow, and sumac-colored
large and small rhombic elements are depict-
ed rhythmically inside the horizontal stripes
on this carpet. These elements are called dam-
ga (stamp) and the kilim is called damgali
(stamped) among weavers and artists. These
kinds of compositions are not complete and
allow for repeating the same elements in dif-
ferent shapes and as many times as you like
during the weaving process. A lively view is
created by professionally harmonizing the el-
ements on the carpet by using dark red with a
lighter red and light blue, white with red and
navy blue, yellow with dark brown, white
with brown, navy blue, yellow, and so on.
Large original elements reminiscent of chan-
gal (fork), designed with navy blue and white,
are depicted along the narrower stripes of the
carpet. The empty spaces are designed with
lines called su (water). The narrow stripes
surrounding the wide stripes are decorated
with classic elements with stepped edges. On
both sides, the stripes are surrounded with
elements called sichandishi (mouse teeth).
The edges of the carpet are surrounded with
black, white, and red stepped motifs. These
motifs are encountered on decorative objects
belonging to the 4th-1st centuries BC, which
were discovered during archeological excava-
tions in Mingechevir. The color design of the
carpet speaks of the weaver’s professional-
ism. Different color shades (green, red, black,
white, orange, brown, navy blue, light blue,
and yellow) create an appealing color pal-
ette. The carpet was woven with high quality,
handmade yarn, colored using natural dyes.
