The date 1298 AH is designed in the
center of the carpet. This carpet was wo-
ven on the basis of damgali (stamped)
kilims and Baku’s chiyi palas composi-
tions.
Kilims and palases were used widely
in the daily life ofAzerbaijanis andwere
used to decorate the floors and walls
of the homes of nomadic Terekemes,
as well as to cover the beds. In ancient
times, these kinds of carpets were very
useful for religious ceremonies and fu-
neral rites. Girls had to have carpets wo-
ven using kilim-palas technique among
their dowries. In addition to being wall
decorations, kilims and palases were
also used as curtains. The main decora-
tion of the carpet consists of wide and
narrow stripes designed horizontally.
Elements called damga (stamp) and
double damga are depicted inside the
wide stripes while rhombic net-like
patterns are placed inside the narrow-
er stripes. On both sides, these stripes
are surrounded with narrow stripes
containing small chainlike rhomboid
elements on the inside, pointing in a
slanted direction. The wide borders of
the carpet are completed with narrow
stripes designed with the same rhom-
boid motifs on the inside with either
brown or dark red backgrounds. Light
blue simple stripes designed horizon-
tally along the carpet are clearly vis-
ible. Motifs ornamented using a white
specific to chiyi palases give the carpet
special beauty. The damga motifs de-
picted on this carpet are distinguished
from damga motifs on other carpets by
their simple designs. These motifs are
shaped on the basis of traditional con-
formity. Despite the continuous repeti-
tion of the same motifs on the carpet,
an attractive composition has been cre-
ated as a result of color alternation. It is
possible to weave this type of carpet in
different sizes. Motifs and colors char-
acteristic of Ganja-Gazakh carpets of
Azerbaijan are collected on this carpet.
This color arrangement is also encoun-
tered on carpets belonging to the Shir-
van group.
