The date 1300 AH appears at the top of the
carpet’s middle field, on the left. This carpet
was woven on the basis of the “Dagkesemen-
li” composition of Gazakh. The name of this
carpet is related to the Dagkesemenli village
located four kilometers from the Gazakh dis-
trict. Carpets of this kind were woven not only
in Dagkesemenli, but also in Girag Kesemenli,
Ag Koynek, Tatli, and Garapapagli villages
and in other carpet weaving quarters of west-
ern Azerbaijan. Some weavers call this carpet
“Caravanserai.” A large oblong gyol (medal-
lion) with a mehrab-shaped (shrine) top and
bottom is located on the red background mid-
dle field of the carpet. A pair of rhombic and
tree-like incomplete elements is depicted on
the mehrab-shaped triangular field, at the top
and bottom. Four red medallions and three
rhombic elements are represented inside the
gyol. Cross-formed rhombic motifs are de-
signed on the red field medallions. The empty
spaces of the gyol are filled with floral, rectan-
gular, double arrow, s-shaped, small, hardly
visible classic and buta-like (almond-shaped)
elements. Tree-like and small rhomboid ele-
ments are placed at the top part of the gyol;
on the right and left, incomplete slanted lines
are depicted. The edges of the gyol are sur-
rounded with orange madakhils. Su (water)
with red, light blue, green, navy blue, and blue
bulges are represented inside the madakhils.
The corners and the edges of the carpet are de-
signed to have a navy blue setting. Geometric,
classic, and floral elements inside the gyol on
the middle field complete the general compo-
sition with repetition of the same method. The
tree motifs depicted on the carpet attract at-
tention with their uniqueness. The light blue,
brown, and cream-colored slanted zigzag ele-
ments depicted at the top and bottom, which
are bulged on the right and left, are directed
towards the center from the edges of the car-
pet’s middle field and contribute to the origi-
nal vision of the carpet. The empty spaces in
the corners of the middle field are decorated
with tree, rectangular, rhombic, netlike, s-
shaped, and zigzag edged leaf motifs on the
right and left. The sichandishi (mouse teeth)
on the edges of the rectangular elements are
clearly noticeable. The empty spaces are filled
with four-, six-, and eight-petal elements. The
orange background middle border is decorat-
ed with four-petal flowers and triangular mo-
tifs with stepped edges and gaychibalig mo-
tifs. These motifs are represented with white,
red, blue, and brown colors. The middle field
is surrounded with blue borders on both sides.
Arrow-like, buta-like, and small barely notice-
able white rectangular motifs are depicted on
the blue borders. These motifs are adorned
with white, green, red, blue, and light blue
colors. The borders are completed with red,
green, brown, and blue su and incomplete
white lines.
