The date 1299 AH appears at the top of the
carpet. This carpet was woven on the basis of
a composition specific to damgali (stamped)
kilim and chiyi palas. This carpet’s rich com-
positional structure was woven using palas
and kilim techniques. The main decoration
of the carpet consists of cornelian, navy and
light blue background wide stripes designed
horizontally. Large elements called dam-
ga (stamp) and small elements called pair
damga are depicted inside the wide stripes.
These elements are specific to 18th and 19th
century carpets. Rhombic elements are de-
signed inside the narrower stripes with a
blue background. On both sides, the edges
of these stripes are surrounded with narrow
stripes designed with cornelian and orange
elements called burma (twisting). The blue
background schemes are decorated with
white chainlike rhombic elements designed
horizontally one after another, which are
specific to chiyi palas. These schemes are sur-
rounded with a brown background stripe.
The narrow stripes between the schemes
are completed with red narrow stripes on
both sides specific to palases. Small slanted
rhombs are depicted inside the stripes. The
rhombs are reminiscent of a chain cut into
pieces. Su (water) completes the edges of
the stripes. Wide cornelian stripes are sur-
rounded on both sides with stripes decorat-
ed with cream- and sumac-colored patterns
called burma. These stripes are completed
with sichandishi (mouse teeth) elements on
the inside and outside. Simple stripes (light
blue, cornelian, and navy blue) related to the
first era of carpet art contributed to the gen-
eral harmony of the carpet. Despite the rich
color shades of the carpet, freedom of design
is evident. The color palette of the carpet ex-
hibits high professionalism. Navy blue, cor-
nelian, and white colors specific to western
Azerbaijani carpets dominate on the carpet.
Cornelian, navy blue, cream, sumac, light
blue, white, and brown colors create an eye-
catching and harmonious sight. The arrange-
ment of the colors on the carpet has been
implemented harmonically. This palas-kilim
was woven of high quality handmade yarn,
colored using natural dyes.
