Carpet. Wool. Pile-weave. Iravan group. Ashtarak, western Azerbaijan. 245x188. 1890.
The date 1890 appears at the top of the carpet’s middle field, below the green medallion and
inside the white field ketebe. This carpet has a unique pattern design.
On the middle field of this white carpet, a large gyol (medallion) with a sumac background is
placed. Four green, two blue, and two navy blue medallions are depicted inside the gyol. Inside
the medallions there are classic rectangular elements with bulged edges. Four-petal flowers are
depicted in the center of these elements and rhombic elements divided into four parts are desig-
ned in the center of the element at the bottom.
From right and left, the edges of the gyol are surrounded with mollabashi (chamomile) repre-
sented in blue and navy blue, with blue zigzags at the top and navy blue zigzags at the bottom.
The empty spaces of the middle field are designed with baklava-shaped motifs and rhombic
motifs with stepped edges. These elements are designed on lines similar to brown tree trunks.
The trunks have branches leaning right and left. The motifs are represented in red, green, and
blue.
Square-shaped and rhombic elements are designed on the branches found in the corners of the
carpet’s middle field. These elements are decorated with blue, sumac, green, and navy blue.
The middle of the field is surrounded with a blue and navy blue border. The elements of the
middle field are larger in the corners, but smaller on the border. These elements are depicted on
the wavy branches seen on the white background border of the carpet.
The brick red and green background borders are decorated with four-petal flowers. The flowers
are represented in red, blue, brown, yellow, navy blue, and sumac on the green background bor-
der and in green, blue, navy blue, white, and yellow on the red background borders.
The red background border on the edges of the carpet is surrounded with white and red in-
complete lines on the outside; the white background border is surrounded with yellow and red
incomplete lines on both sides; and the red middle borders are encircled with white and red
incomplete lines on all sides. The edges of the lines are completed with brown su (water). The
yellow and red lines are repeated on the edges of the middle field. The color design and composi-
tional structure specific to Azerbaijan’s Gazakh carpets are reflected on this carpet in a traditional
manner.
