Carpet. Wool. Pile-weave. Iravan group. Ashtarak, western Azerbaijan. 292x105. 1332 AH/1911 CE.
The date 1332 AH appears in the upper part of the carpet’s middle field, inside the brick red background border. The main decoration
of this yellow background carpet’s middle field consists of butas (almond-shaped) aligned one after another. The butas look right in the
first row from the top and left in the second row and change alternately in the remaining rows. This arrangement yields a very attractive
compositional structure. Veteran weavers call these butas “shabalid” (chestnut).
The butas are designed with brick red, black, light blue, white, yellow, navy blue, and brown. Flower and small buta motifs are placed
inside the larger butas. These motifs are designed in blue, light green, dark brown, red, yellow, and white.
The empty spaces of the middle field are filled with small dark brown motifs with stepped edges. Weavers interpret these as evil-eye-
catching” symbols. There are red gazma on the edges of the safety motifs.
The main white background border of the carpet is decorated with octagonal medallions. The colors depicted on the middle field are
repeated on these motifs as well.
In the center of the octagonal medallions, rhombic elements with stepped edges are depicted. The colors of these elements harmonize
with the colors of the butas and octagonal elements on the middle field. Brick red background guard stripes designed with hexagonal
