The date 1327 AH appears in the mid-
dle field at the bottom of the medallion
located at the top of the carpet. On the
cornelian middle field of the carpet three
large hexagonal gyols (medallion) are
depicted. The edges of the central me-
dallion are designed with navy blue and
red zigzags; the edges of the gyols at the
top and bottom are represented in light
blue and red zigzags. The upper part of
the central gyol has a green and navy
blue background, but the lower part has
a green background. The blue field oc-
tagonal element in the center of the gyol
is located inside the red background me-
dallion with bulged edges. Light blue and
blue eight-petal flowers are depicted on
the bulges of the medallion, on the right
and left. The empty spaces of the bulges
are designed with four-petal red flowers.
There are eight-pointed star motifs inside
the geometric element in the center. The
similar-shaped elements are illustrated
on the gyols at the top and bottom of the
middle field. Only these bulged elements
are designed with light red colors, but the
eight-angle element in the center is de-
picted on the green background. There are
horseshoe motifs inside these elements.
The similar-shaped eight-angle elements
are repeated on the right and left of the
smaller medallions. The empty spaces on
the middle field of the carpet are repre-
sented with geometric elements designed
with horseshoes and eight-sided stars. A
light blue zigzag madakhil surrounds the
middle field. Wavy patterns are depicted
on the main red background border of the
carpet. The first and simplest among the
pattern motifs of the decorative applied
arts of Azerbaijan are incomplete and
wavy lines. These are encountered on fa-
ience dishes found inGazakh, Goygol, and
Nakhchivan and were produced 4.5 thou-
sand years ago. As the centuries went by,
new and more complex decorative motifs
were created on the basis of wavy lines.
The empty spaces between the waves are
decorated with flowers, and doganag-like
motifs on both sides. The main border is
surrounded with blue background guard
stripes on the inside and with light blue
background guard stripes on the outside.
The same wavy elements as those on the
guard stripes are designed in red shades.
The empty spaces between the wavy lines
are decorated with cream, red, brown,
light blue, navy blue, blue, green, and or-
ange butas (almond-shaped). The borders
are finished with red and white incom-
plete lines on both sides. The edges of the
incomplete lines are designed with black
su. Red, navy blue, and light blue colors
dominate on the carpet. The repeated de-
sign of these colors on different motifs
produce an appealing vision.
