Local weavers called this carpet a “Goshagol Arjiman.”
Four “gyols” (medallions) have been depicted in each row of the
central field of this dark blue background carpet.
The background of the pair of “gyols” on the top and bottom of the central field
are blue and the four “gyols” in the center are laurel-colored. The selvages (self-
finished edges) of the “gyols” are surrounded by scallops and square-shaped ele-
ments. “Dord unsur” (four element) motifs have been placed inside the laurel-colo-
red background medallions in the center. Flowery branches wrapped around from
the selvages of the lozenge medallions become a flower garland.
There is an octagonal star motif inside the octagonal medallion in the center of the
carpet’s central field. This dark blue star motif is placed inside a hook-like element.
Triangle elements have been trimmed on the four sides of the medallion. A medal-
lion with a similar form has been placed in the gap between the medallions in the
upper section.
“Gubba” motifs have been depicted on the medallions on the top and bottom of
the carpet’s central field. The selvages of laurel-colored background “gubba” are
scalloped. The scallops are supplemented by white colored “su” (water). The gaps in
the central field are filled with man-woman, animal, bird, “darag,” flower, jug, can,
and other classic elements.
The white background major border has been trimmed with classic elements typi-
cal to Shirvan carpets. These elements are found in the “Chukhanli” carpets of Shir-
van, Guba, and Salyan. These elements are specific to ancient Mugan carpets. The
major border is surrounded by laurel-colored background “medakhils.” The “me-
dakhils” are decorated with small triangular elements.
The narrow border surrounding the central field is decorated with triangle motifs.
The color of the motifs in the central field is repeated in the motifs of the narrow
border. The narrow border is completed with “mollabashi” on the inside. The “mol-
labashi” has been trimmed with a laurel-like color and its selvages with white “su”
(water).
The pile and wrap is made of wool, but the weft of the carpet is made from cotton.
The storage condition of the carpet is excellent. The carpet is of artistic, historic, and
scientific importance.
