The Tree Cult in Azerbaijan
résumé
This article deals with the founding of the tree cult and its role in the lives of people.
The article notes that in perceiving their surrounding environment and natural pro-
cesses, people have idolized different trees and plants, attributing them with extraor-
dinary forces and turning to them for help in difficult times. Azerbaijan is believed to
be one of the first centers of tree worship. Information about tree worship in national
folklore and historical pieces is analyzed in this article. Among the trees worshipped
in Azerbaijan, the oak, hornbeam, walnut, elm, apple, fig, olive, hackberry, willow,
and other trees are mentioned. The faith and beliefs of people concerning these trees
emerged in the form of different taboos and prohibitions. In accordance with the-
se practices, relevant beliefs are researched for each tree. The article also asserts
that another tree related to the eschatological (the theology concerned with the final
events of history or of humankind) beliefs of Azerbaijanis is the mythological “tree of
paradise.” This tree is considered to be a huge tree located in paradise that has leaves
each of which concern the fate of one human. When a leaf falls, it touches other lea-
ves, affects them, and the ears of the “owners” of these leaves ring. The article conc-
ludes with a thesis that it is not a coincidence that primitive beliefs and faiths continue
living in the daily life of people and have reached the modern era when science and
mentality have reached the highest point; it is because these beliefs are an inseparable
part of daily life and the lifestyles of people both historically and throughout the tests
of the modern era.

Культ дерева в Азербайджане
Резюме
В статье рассказывается о возникновении культа дерева, о его роли в жизни
людей. Отмечается, что люди, пытаясь понять окружающий мир и природные
процессы, обожествляли разные деревья и растения, веруя в их сверхъестествен-
ную силу, а также обращались к ним в трудные минуты. Азербайджан считает-
ся одним из первых очагов поклонения дереву. Рассматривается информация о
поклонении дереву в фольклоре и исторических произведениях. Указывается,
что в Азербайджане поклонялись таким деревьям, как дуб, азат (нил), граб, оре-
ховое дерево, вяз, яблоня, инжир (фиговое дерево), оливковое дерево, дагдаган
(каменное дерево – каркас), ива и др. Вера людей в эти деревья проявлялась в
виде табу, запретов и других форм. В связи с этим исследуются определённые
поверья, связанные с каждым отдельным деревом. Упоминается также ещё одно
мифологическое «райское дерево», которое связано с эсхатологическими пове-
рьями (учение о конце мира и человечества) азербайджанцев. Под «райским де-
ревом» понимается огромное дерево в раю, каждый листок которого знаменует
судьбу одного человека. Падая и касаясь других листов, листок повреждает их
и, тем самым, у их «хозяев» начинает звенеть в ушах. В конце было выдвину-
то предположение, что сохранение первобытной веры до современности, когда
наука и мировоззрение достигли наивысшего расцвета, превращение её в не-
отъемлемую часть народного быта и образа жизни на протяжении всей истории
связано с успешным преодолением всех сложных испытаний и экзаменов.
