Carpet. Wool. Pile-weave. Iravan group. Sardarabad, western Azerbaijan. 221x102. 1320 AH/1899 CE.
The date 1320 AH appears in the upper part of the carpet, below the tree-like motif.
Four large tree motifs are designed on the middle field of this brick red background carpet. There are lilac and navy blue paired-
bird images standing face-to-face on the middle field under the trees. There is a cross-like element between the birds. The zigzags
on the edges of the navy blue birds’ bodies are decorated with white su (water) and the zigzags on the edges of the lilac birds’
bodies are designed with black su.
Bird images are one of the motifs encountered most often in different areas of the decorative applied arts of Azerbaijan, inclu-
ding carpets. The bird image was one of the most widespread images in the Azerbaijani arts, including peacock images. Peacock
images have been used repeatedly on metal products, faience dishes, fabrics, carpets, wall paintings, and other items.
